Gansu granule is a Chinese medicine formulated through the extraction of Penthorum Chinese Parsh. It is now recorded in the Drug Standard of Ministry of Public Health of the People's Republic of China, TCM Preparation, Volume 13th and was included in the Catalogue of National Essential Drugs for three consecutive years since 1998. It helps in lowering transaminase level, treating jaundice, protecting the liver and invigorating the spleen. It is used in treating chronic active hepatitis, hepatitis B and acute virus hepatitis. It is proven to be effectively after years of clinical applications.

Treating virus hepatitis
　　Gulin Gansu aids in improving the functions of the liver, protecting the liver and improving the clinical symptoms of virus hepatitis. It is effective in treating all types of virus hepatitis.
　　The hospitals in Shanghai had conducted a three-month control test experiment to find out the effectiveness of Gansu in treating chronic hepatitis B through a sample of 129 patients. The test group made up 90 patients who were treated with Gansu granules while the control group made up 39 patients who were treated with Yiganqingrejiedu granules. The results of the experiments showed no signs of side effects. The patients from the test group showed an 87.78% improvement in their body symptoms and their ALT and AST levels improved by 76.67% and 73.08% respectively.

The researchers conducted another control test experiments on a sample of 305 patients to find out the curative effects of Gansu granules on various types of virus hepatitis. The results of the control group who were given QiangLiNing showed signs of lowered blood platelets and increased bile secretion. However, the time taken for the Test group who were given Gansu granule to react with the same signs was shorter and results showed that these reactions were more superior to results shown from the Control group. Sichuan People’s Hospital, Sichuan Liver Research Centre and Shandong Hospital conducted a clinical test on Gansu granule against GanLiXin, XiLiBinAn and YiGanNing respectively. The results from all showed that “Gulin Gansu” is safe and functions to protect liver, treat jaundice, improves symptoms and restore the liver’s functionality.

Helps in hepatic fibrosis
　　Hepatic Fibrosis is a common body symptom of chronic hepatitis and a basis that leads to liver cirrhosis. “Gulin Gansu” functions to improve on hepatic fibrosis and helps to slow down the advancement of the symptoms leading to liver cirrhosis. The curative effects would be more significant when taken together with Danshen root.
　　Scholars had conducted a control test experiment on a sample of 193 patients using YiGanLing tablets as the control to find out the effectiveness of Gansu granules in treating hepatic fibrosis. The results from the two sample group on their HA and PCII levels before and after the treatment showed a significant difference (P <0 .0 5 ). Gansu showed obvious results in lowering the blood serum HA level, which is effective in reversing liver cirrhosis progress. (Refer to Figure 2 below)

Gansu granule protects liver from damages resulted from medication
　　Recent years showed that tuberculosis has been increasing and medications such as Rifampicin, Pyramide and etc used in the treatment have been discovered to be bad for the liver. This had caused treatment of tuberculosis to be affected. Xie Zhengliang had conducted a test experiment on a sample of tuberculosis patients to find out the effectiveness of Gansu granule on protecting liver and was rewarded with great clinical results to prove its efficacy. The Observation group who were given Gansu granule concurrently while receiving their tuberculosis treatment were concluded with none examined to be suffering from liver malfunctioning. However, 5 out of 12 patients who received the same treatment without taking Gansu granules had their liver examined to be functioning abnormally.

Gansu granules in treating hepatitis B related nephritis
　　Hepatitis B is a critical factor that leads to membranous nephropathy and proliferation of membranous nephritis, which have no known treatment to date. However, research has proved that Gulin Gansu can help to treat hepatitis B related nephritis.
Zhao Xiangfa conducted an experiment test on nine nephritis-related cases to find out the effectiveness of Gansu granules in treating nephritis. The experiment showed that Gansu is relatively effective with a remission rate of 77.78% and a partial remission rate of 22.22% (a total effectiveness of l00％) and HBeAg/HBeAb seroconversion was observed in 6 patients (66.7%). The results showed that Gansu granules are effective in restraining HBV replication and promoting recovery of glomerular basement membrane.

Gansu granule treats gastro duodenal ulcer
　　Gastro duodenal ulcer is a common factor that results in the upper gastrointestinal bleeding. West China Hospital and Sichuan Provincial Hospital made use of the combination of Chinese and western medicine by adding Gansu granules to 20 milligram of Losec for the treatment of gastro duodenal ulcer and received positive curative effects. It has been discovered through the experiment that the rising level of blood TB does not aid in the recovery of gastro duodenal ulcer and Gansu granule’s functions in protecting liver and treating jaundice helps better recovery of gastro duodenal ulcer.
